Viewing Chinese with T-Mobile's RIM BlackBerry 8100

The current T-Mobile BlackBerry 8100 (Pearl) can only view English. The Chinese version has not been released yet so there is no Chinese ROM update for it. It's very inconvienent for me since I receive a lot of Chinese email everyday. Plus, I read lots of Chinese blogs as well.

After search the web for awhile, I have found out a way to install Simplified Chinese into the 8100. However, I really want to view Traditional Chinese as well. Finally, I have found the solution.

Goto my download section and download the gzip file.  Unzip the file and you will have 4 files.  Using the BlackBerry Application Loader in Windows to load in the two ALX files. After installed these files, the 8100 should be reboot by itself. It will take about 3-5 minutes. Once it comes back again, try to send yourself some Chinese emails and you should be able to see them all without problem.

(Update: Many readers had sent me email and complained they cannot find the files in my iDisk. I have tried and found out Firefox 2.0 has problem with Apple's DotMac. Please use older version of Firefox (1.5), IE5/6/7, or Safari to my iDisk.)

(07/26/2007 Update: Someone had successfully installed the files into his/her AT&T Curve - Blackberry 8800. I only have the 8100 so I NEVER try to do this and confirm if it works or not on any other model of Blackberry phones. So please perform the hack on your own risk.)

(11/29/2007 Update: Someone commented only 1 file can be downloaded but not all 4 of them. I just tried today and I can get all the 4 files. Try to use a different browser because Apple's .Mac sometimes behave very strange.)

(07/14/2008 Update: Thanks for everyone comes to try to use my method to install Chinese fonts into your Blackberries. Unfortunately, I have fully switched to iPhone (for personal) and Windows Mobile (for work). As a result, I really don't have any way to have a Blackberry to troubleshoot your problems. Very sorry about that.)

(07/24/2008 Update: I try to summaries of what the other readers experience on installing the font files into their Blackberry here. Hope it helps.)

(09/10/2008 Update: According to a reader, he has no problem to install Chinese using my method with his 8130. For details, please check here.)

(02/08/2009 Update: I have copied this tutorial to my new blog site.)

Do you have any idea if this would work on a Sprint RIM BlackBerry 7250, running v4.1.0.273 (Platform 2.2.0.99)?

Thanks,

Webster

Icey Cake said...

I think the general idea is the same since the Blackberry OS is using Unicode. The OS is just missing the Chinese fonts to display the character. You can give it a try but I never own previous version of Blackberry.

David L. said...

Do you have to use App Loader on Windows? I only have mac, and I used PocketMac to load the file, but it didn't restart the device. After I manually restarted the device, it stays the same. (can't read chinese).

Icey Cake (冰餅) said...

David,

I have tried PocketMac to install software or the Chinese fonts but never success. Since you don't have Windows, I think your only choice is either using Parallel/VMWare (if Intel Mac) or Virtual PC (if PowerPC Mac).

Just wanted to say "Thanks!"

Works great on my T-mobile Pearl, 4.2.0.71.

You can *try* installing this OTA -- all it takes is converting an ALX file to a JAD file which loads the CODs.

net_rim_font_chinese.jad

Manifest-Version: 1.0
RIM-COD-Module-Name: Pearl_Chinese_Font
RIM-COD-Module-Dependencies: net_rim_os,net_rim_cldc
RIM-COD-Creation-Time: 1152769541
RIM-COD-URL: net_rim_font_chinese.cod
RIM-COD-Size: 273578
MIDlet-Name: Pearl Chinese Font
MIDlet-Version: 1.0
MIDlet-Vendor: RIM
MIDlet-Jar-URL: unknown
MicroEdition-Profile: MIDP-2.0
MicroEdition-Configuration: CLDC-1.1

net_rim_font_chinese_hong_kong.jad

Manifest-Version: 1.0
RIM-COD-Module-Name: Pearl_Chinese_Hong_Kong_Font
RIM-COD-Module-Dependencies: net_rim_os,net_rim_cldc
RIM-COD-Creation-Time: 1152769541
RIM-COD-URL: net_rim_font_chinese_hong_kong.cod
RIM-COD-Size: 718142
MIDlet-Name: Pearl Chinese Hong Kong Font
MIDlet-Version: 1.0
MIDlet-Vendor: RIM
MIDlet-Jar-URL: unknown
MicroEdition-Profile: MIDP-2.0
MicroEdition-Configuration: CLDC-1.1

Make sure your Apache webserver has the following MIME types configured (add to a .htaccess, or embed in the main config file, etc.) that will serve up JAD/JAR/COD properly:

httpd.conf

# J2ME
AddType application/java-archive .jar
AddType text/vnd.sun.j2me.app-descriptor .jad

# BlackBerry
AddType application/vnd.rim.cod .cod

I haven't tested it with these specific files, but I've converted other non-OTA to OTA installs just fine. And of course you already have Apache on your OS X machine, so it's easy as pie usually. :)

Hey Iceycake, I can't seem to get those 4 files that you hosted before. Do you think there is a way I can still get them from you? Thanks.

It seems FireFox 2.0 has problem to access .Mac iDisk. Try to use FireFox 1.5 or IE to access my public share in iDisk.

Icey cake, quick qeustions: is there a way to write simplified chinese (sms and email) on the pearl? The install only allows me to read. Thanks for your help!

Icey Cake (冰餅) said...

This hack only allows you to read Chinese on the Blackberry Pearl. However, if you want to read/write, the only option is installed the Chinese firmware. I believe you can get it from the Hong Kong vendor. I'm not sure the details because I never try. However, I know that's how the older Blackberry models (6xxx/7xxx) work.

Đỗ Anh Tuấn, I'm sorry but what exactly do you need? I have posted the Chinese fonts and the procedure already.

Thank for reply,
What i need to know is how did you make the file. It may be the tutorial or guide. My target is turning my BB 8100 in readable Vietnamese character . BB 8100 is unicode ready but it lack of vietnamese font, like Tahoma or Arial.
Thank,

Hi there Fei Hua,
Sorry for noise. Could you please build the file which use Tahoma font (Windows\Fonts) for me?
Or if you are not available could you send me the guide to build it.
Thank a million.

Icey Cake (冰餅) said...

Đỗ Anh Tuấn: Sorry for the late reply because I was out of town for a couple days and do not have Internet access. Anyway, I didn't compile the font myself. I basically grabbed the Chinese fonts from the other version of Blackberry firmware and created the new install files for them.

Does this file help display Chinese when playing MP3 files?

Icey Cake (冰餅) said...

I rarely use my 8100 as MP3 player. However, it seems the filename appears as strange characters but the MP3 tags are all in Chinese.

Thanks. I have downloaded all the 4 files, but after downloading, I found the files size are much smaller than original as .alx files are 1k each and 2 .cod files are 702kb and 268kb. How should I install them into my pc and into my BB 8300, please advise me more in details, I have never run .alx and .cod files before, thanks in advance.

First of all, what do you mean "original file size"? If your blackberry already has these files, your blackberry probably has the Chinese language fonts already and you don't need to install my files.

If you got black dots when you view chinese, make sure you install both alx file. I missed the hong kong one and after I install it, I got no problem.

I saw some users encountered this problem before, but there was no solution posted. I have a Blackberry Curve 8310 with AT&T. I downloaded the four files to my windows PC, had to change file names from "..cod.zip" to "..cod" and "..alx.txt" to "..alx". The Hongkong font file names were too long, I had to restore the original file names. Anyway, the issue is that, I opened my desktop PC Blackberry application loader, and point it to the .alx files, I got error message "No additional applications designed for your device were found".
I also copied the four files to a web page I can download, my BB downloaded the four files into memory but did nothing to install.
Can anyone offer some suggestion?
Thanks,
Raymond

I bought my Pearl 8120 from HK and deleted the Traditional Chinese language because I didn't think I need it.

I re-installed these 4 files and worked like a charm!

Thanks!

Here's another way to load Traditional Chinese, Japanese, and Korean fonts.

1. Download a Chinese (East Asian) version of BlackBerry software from a Hong Kong carrier (or the RIM web site), e.g. CSL.

2. Install it on your computer.

3. Delete the Vendor.xml file.

4. Run BlackBerry Desktop Manager and go into Application Loader. Click on "Add" and browse the following folder.

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Shared\...

Look for the "CJK.alx" file.

The Traditional Chinese, Japanese, and Korean fonts will show up. For some odd reason, Simplified Chinese will not show up, so I loaded Simplified Chinese with ice Cake's two files.

I use a Verizon Pearl 8130, which will not accept Chinese Core OS from the GSM carriers in Asia. The Asian carriers offer the 8100, 8110, and 8120.

Please help me how to show tranditional font fully.

Please advise.

Rename it to the correct ones, blackberry will recognize it. It should work!
